Surrey Stars were helped to their first win of the tournament by Sarah Taylor, who scored an unbeaten fifty in a comfortable chase. Put in to bat, Western Storm were given a good start by Smriti Mandhana who stroked a 21-ball 37. But that start was frittered away as both Mandhana and skipper Heather Knight were dismissed in the same over, the ninth of the innings, by Sophia Dunkley Brown. The double blow was something that Storm could never recover from as they meandered to 132 in their 20 overs.
The target wasn’t a stiff one, and it was made lighter by the blazing start provided by Surrey’s openers, Lizelle Lee (22 off 9 balls) and Bryony Smith (33 off 21). And unlike Western Storm, they were able to take forward the good work done by the openers. Taylor, coming in at the fall of Lee, took over the lead role, hitting nine boundaries in her 34-ball knock and ensuring that the chase was wrapped up without any hiccups.
Brief Scores: Western Storm 132/9 (Smriti Mandhana 37; Sophia Dunkley Brown 3-18) lost to Surrey Stars 136/3 in 15.5 overs (Sarah Taylor 50*, Bryony Smith 33; Danielle Gibson 2-34) by seven wickets.
