Colin Ingram and Jonathan Wells played key roles with the bat as Adelaide Strikers defeated Melbourne Stars comfortably by 41 runs at the Adelaide Oval on Friday (January 11). Set 179, there were contributions from Evan Gulbis and Dwayne Bravo but with no significant partnership flourishing, the visitors were all out for 137.
Sent in to bat, Strikers were 21 for 2 before Travis Head and Ingram scored 74 for the third wicket to set the platform for the lower order. Head made a handy 31-ball 41 while his partner went on to complete a half-century before he was dismissed for 57 off 41. Ingram was dismissed in the 17th over and by then the hosts had also lost Rashid Khan and their captain.
It was Wells’s 32 off 14 that gave the innings the much-needed thrust in the end and took them to a challenging total. Liam Plunkett accounted for four of the five wickets to fall while Jackson Bird bagged one for 13 from his three overs.
Stars were on track to chase the target down as openers Ben Dunk and Evan Gulbis raised 50 in 5.2 overs. But both batsmen fell in space of six deliveries and the side never really recovered from that. Bravo looked threatening but was taken out by Rashid Khan while Ben Laughlin struck out three poles to hurt Stars in their chase. From 50 for no loss, they were left tottering at 105 for 6 and eventually folded for a paltry score.
Michael Neser, Liam O Connor and Wes Agar also picked two wickets each to make their presence felt and choked Stars in a tough chase.
Brief scores: Adelaide Strikers 178/5 in 20 overs (Colin Ingram 57; Liam Plunkett 4-36) beat Melbourne Stars 137 in 19.2 overs (Evan Gulbis 37; Ben Laughlin 3-19) by 41 runs.
