Mr. 50-0, Floyd Mayweather Jr. is coming out of retirement once again ladies and gentlemen.
A rematch with Manny Pacquiao seems imminent, right?.
Well, actually it seems as though he has his eyes set on undefeated IBF champ Errol Spence Jr.
Wait a minute, he’s actually taking on Tenshin Nasukawa on December 31 in Japan. Never heard of Nasukawa? That might be because he’s a kickboxer.
Yup, that’s right.
Mayweather has officially crossed over—or has he?
Although Mayweather announced a deal on Sunday with Rizin Fighting Federation, a Japanese MMA promotional company, it is unclear what the rules of the December 31 bout in Japan will be.
Floyd has flirted with the idea of competing in an MMA bout for quite some time, but many never believed he would take the leap. More surprising is the person Floyd is actually facing.
Tenshin Nasukawa is 27-0 and is just 20 years of age. He is the current Rise Featherweight Champion and has a huge following in Japan.
Having said that, Mayweather has always enjoyed having the odds stacked in his favor so it comes as no surprise that both the fight rules and weight class have not been officially set yet.
“We’ll talk about that,” said Mayweather at the press conference. “We’ll get that situated within the next couple weeks.”
Although he was a bit elusive when questioned about the specifics of the fight, Mayweather did not flat out say no to the idea of kickboxing being a part of the bout.
“I just want to entertain,” said Mayweather. “I will speak with my team and let my team get with Rizin. I’m sure they’ll come up with a great idea.”
Money May will undoubtedly be looking to gain some sort of advantage. Be that as it may, he is taking a big risk by jumping into the world of MMA.
The only thing Mayweather loves more than his unblemished record is nine figure paydays. He surely will receive a ridiculous amount of money for his new venture.
His opponent might be unknown in the states, but in Japan he is highly regarded and viewed as the next big star. Floyd loves to gamble, but this could be a costly one.
