Loughborough Lightning registered their second win of the Women’s Super League as they beat Southern Vipers comfortably by six wickets at the Rose Bowl on Wednesday (July 25). Both teams had come on the back of impressive wins in their opening encounter but it was Lightning who stamped their authority yet again to pick up a vital win.

Chasing just 106, Lightning didn’t panic despite losing Sophie Devine and Rachael Haynes early on. Amy Ellen Jones and Elyse Vilani held the innings together to get the chase back on track. The two batters added 71 for the third wicket off 12.2 overs and this stand ended any hopes of an unlikely comeback from Vipers.

Amelia Kerr’s excellent bowling figures of 1/6 off her four overs did create some pressure but despite both Jones and Vilani falling in the space of three deliveries, the formalities were completed by Lightning with seven balls to spare in the run chase.

However, it was the bowlers who set up the win for Lightning again with an impressive display earlier in the evening. Skipper Devine led from the front by getting rid of her counterpart Suzie Bates in the very first over of the game by trapping her leg-before-wicket for a duck.

Linsey Smith then struck in the fourth over to send the dangerous Danielle Wyatt back to the pavilion. From 17/2, Vipers staged a mini recovery on the back of a 28-run stand between Tammy Beaumont and Mignon du Preez but Lightning fought back again with a flurry of wickets.

First, it was du Preez who had to make the long walk back to the pavilion and when Jenny Gunn bagged the big wicket of Beaumont, the Vipers were reeling at 73/5. The final five wickets managed to add just 32 more runs as Devine cleaned up the tail with a couple of wickets to finish with figures of 3/21. 20 more runs from the Vipers could have perhaps caused some panic.

Brief scores: Southern Vipers 105 in 19.3 overs (Tammy Beaumont 37; Sophie Devine 3-21, Linsey Smith 2-18) lost to Loughborough Lightning 109/4 in 18.5 overs (Elyse Vilani 35, Amy Ellen Jones 35; Amelia Kerr 1-6) by six wickets
