NHL – Ranking the best Stanley Cup losers of the past 20 years – Weekly Reader

12:40 PM ET Greg WyshynskiESPN The Washington Capitals and Vegas Golden Knights will play for the Stanley Cup, as we all predicted. Another prediction: There will be people dressed as Elvis in Las Vegas, and Capitals fans will create a collection of lame “has left the building” jokes on poster board, perhaps in correlation with Marc-Andre Fleury stickers placed in urinals. Another prediction: a hockey writer on press row will literally shriek when an empty netter in Games 1 or 2 gets them the over they wagered on. Hey, it’s…

7:10 AM ET Emily Kaplan Greg Wyshynski Greg Wyshynski: So which occurrence is the greater harbinger of the apocalypse: Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals winning the Stanley Cup, or an expansion team winning the Stanley Cup? Emily Kaplan: The Capitals exorcising their demons feels cathartic to me. We always knew Ovi & Co. had the talent — it really was just a matter of time. The Golden Knights, on the other hand, had 500-1 odds. Even their own management didn’t think they could win like this for another few…

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Evander Kane knew the San Jose Sharks were a good fit when Joe Thornton showed up for a late-night airport pickup following a trade deadline deal with the Buffalo Sabres. That comfort was only reinforced over the next 10 weeks on the ice and in the dressing room. It left Kane with an easy choice as he headed toward free agency, and he bypassed a chance at the open market Thursday by signing a seven-year deal worth a reported $49 million to stay with the Sharks…

David Quinn Comes to the Rangers With a Gift for Developing Young Players

Jordan, get the puck down low. Jordan, stop lagging. Jordan, watch your grades. Then, in April, after Greenway had signed with the Minnesota Wild after his junior season, Quinn hopped a plane to Nashville to surprise him at his N.H.L. debut. “Quinnie was tough on Greenway, especially at the beginning because we all knew how good Greenway could be,” said…

9:14 AM ET Greg WyshynskiESPN Wes Johnson is a Washington, D.C., sports fanatic. He went to a Redskins Super Bowl, but then witnessed 27 years of middling results. He has watched the Bullets become the Wizards and then fail to play for a championship. He has watched the Expos become the Nationals and also fail to play for a championship. When it came to the particular brand of anguish the Washington Capitals had perfected through the decades, Johnson had the best seat in the house to experience the heartbreak: Since…
