MLB players concerned about rebuilding teams, attendance drop

NEW YORK — Baseball players are concerned the Seattle Mariners have become yet another rebuilding team and might be joined by others following a season of steep attendance drops among clubs that faded early and never contended for the playoffs. Union head Tony Clark and new collective bargaining director Bruce Meyer said Wednesday their members also are concerned about rapid change in the way games are played, such as the increased use of relief pitchers, and are willing to speak with management this offseason about whether counteracting changes are needed.…

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — Lamar Jackson has won his first three NFL starts. He has keyed the NFL’s most dominant rushing attack over the past three weeks. In Sunday’s 26-16 win in Atlanta, Jackson fumbled three times, losing one (which was returned 74 yards for a touchdown). Sunday against the high-scoring Kansas City…

MLB — Arizona Diamondbacks’ rebuild should quicken with Paul Goldschmidt trade

It only made sense for the Arizona Diamondbacks to trade Paul Goldschmidt, who is one year from free agency and whose contract pays him just $14 million this year, making that year quite valuable in the trade market to any team looking to contend in 2019 and with an open spot at first base. The St. Louis Cardinals were a perfect trade partner, with surplus talent behind the plate and on the mound — and in the outfield, where they still have a few more players than they can use…
